11 May 2019           Detailing Tech Session – Art Cox, North Falmouth MA – 9:30 am – Bring supplies

A complete detail includes interior dusting, vacuuming, upholstery, dashboard, instrument and glass cleaning and care, but we’re going to limit ourselves to exterior cleaning with special attention to cleaning and caring for the paint finish. Ideally, we would avoid these tasks under direct hot sun or in a rain or snow storm. An overcast day is best or under cover of shade or in the late afternoon or early evening of a sunny day would be good as well, but, we’ll see what happens.

There’s a pretty complete article about detailing (https://guidetodetailing.com/), plus I’ve included a cartoon for washing, a cartoon for detailing and a concise flowchart for the entire operation (which we will follow).

Car Wash Tools we’ll use are a Mr. Clean AutoDry Car Wash Kit (discontinued, but some kits and replacement parts are still available on eBay and Amazon, etc.) https://www.amazon.com/Mr-Clean-AutoDry-System-Starter/dp/B0006M56CE/ref=sr_1_5?hvadid=241920243969&hvdev=c&hvlocphy=1018204&hvnetw=g&hvpos=1t1&hvqmt=e&hvrand=17237825477547956818&hvtargid=aud-676677759524%3Akwd-433093610&keywords=mr+clean+car+wash&qid=1551841995&s=gateway&sr=8-5&tag=googhydr-20 , a dedicated car wash bucket with lid (c. $5 from Wal-Mart) and Dirt Trap (aka “grit guard” c. $4 from AutoZone)*, and various wash mitts, microfiber cloths and towels, wheel and tire brushes. *I specifically mention this because I’ve seen car wash bucket kits like this elsewhere for well over $30!

Detail Tools we’ll use are a paint clay bar for contaminant removal (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-JsTNAV9Z8) and an orbital polisher for polishing and waxing (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJRGHyfIVX4), plus polish, wax and a various specialty applicator pads, wheel cleaners and dressings.

Please note: Participants should buy and bring a paint clay bar and, optionally, rubber gloves with them. Clay bars are available at Amazon, eBay, Wal-Mart, AutoZone, etc. Be prepared to remove watches, rings, jewelry, etc. or tape over them, also true for metallic belt buckles. Coffee and donuts will be provided.
